The Bow Valley region is a wonderful place that encompasses several communities including Lake Louise, Banff, Canmore, Western M.D. of Bighorn (Harvie Heights, Dead Man’s Flats, Exshaw, Lac des Arcs), Kananaskis, and the Îyârhe (Stoney) Nakoda community of Mînî Thnî. It is important to note that this region is located in Treaty 7 territory, which is shared by the Îyârhe (Stoney) Nakoda Nations, the Blackfoot Confederacy, and the Tsuu T’ina Nation, as well as being home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3.
With a population of approximately 24,000 residents, the Bow Valley is a diverse and multicultural community. People from over 60 countries call this region home, speaking various languages such as English, French, Tagalog, Japanese, Spanish, Korean, German, and more, although English is the most spoken language.
The main industries in the Bow Valley are centered around tourism and hospitality. Banff and Lake Louise, two communities within Banff National Park, are especially popular destinations for visitors. Lake Louise is a small community, often referred to as a hamlet, with fewer than 1,000 residents. Due to special regulations for the national park, only individuals who meet the Need to Reside regulations in Banff and Lake Louise are eligible to live in these areas.
