Our History

The Bow Valley is located within Treaty 7 territory, the traditional and unceded lands of the Îyârhe Nakoda (Stoney Nakoda) Nations — including the Bearspaw, Chiniki, and Goodstoney First Nations — as well as the Tsuut’ina First Nation and the Blackfoot Confederacy, made up of the Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai Nations. These Nations have cared for this land through oral traditions, cultural practices, and stewardship for thousands of years.

European explorers and settlers arrived later, followed by the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway, which helped Banff develop as a community. Banff National Park, Canada’s first national park, stands as a lasting symbol of the region’s commitment to protecting its incredible natural environment and wildlife.

We encourage everyone to honour and respect the deep history and ongoing presence of Indigenous peoples as part of this vibrant community.
