Full-Time, Term 6 Month Contract
The Town of Banff is seeking a dedicated Labourer (Sortline Operator) to join the Resource Recovery team. This position plays a vital role in keeping Banff clean, sustainable, and beautiful by operating our sortline and assisting with other key functions such as commercial truck support, Town Run pedestrian bin servicing, and Large Item Pick up.
You’ll be part of a team that embraces variety, physical work, and a commitment to excellence in resource recovery and waste management.
As a Labourer in Resource Recovery, your primary responsibilities will include operating and monitoring the recycling sortline to ensure accurate sorting of mixed recyclables while inspecting materials for contaminants and non-recyclable items. You will assist with the collection of residential and commercial waste, including pedestrian bins throughout the town, and provide support to commercial truck drivers through spotting, bin handling, and general truck maintenance. In winter, you will perform snow and ice removal to maintain access to waste containers. Additional duties include moving and placing containers, recording the weights of collected materials, and completing maintenance tasks such as litter picking, cleaning bin sites, and shoveling snow as required. Acting as an ambassador for the Town of Banff, you will communicate effectively with the public, address general inquiries, and contribute to maintaining a clean and organized work environment while following safety protocols.

Job Requirements
The ideal candidate will have a Grade 12 diploma or equivalent and possess a valid Class 5 Alberta Operator’s License, with a clear Driver’s Abstract required upon hire. Familiarity with WHMIS legislation and experience operating light-duty trucks and similar equipment are essential, along with the ability to meet the physical demands of the role, including pushing, pulling 50–100 lbs, climbing on and off trucks, and working in extreme weather conditions. Experience in a public works or waste management environment is an asset, and Basic First Aid and CPR certification is preferred. The role requires a strong work ethic, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, proficiency in using tools and light equipment for waste collection and sorting, and a commitment to workplace safety and adherence to Occupational Health and Safety legislation. Effective communication skills are essential for working with team members, supervisors, and the public, alongside a solutions-focused approach to challenges and tasks.
The Resource Recovery department operates seven days a week, year-round and shifts may vary.
