Job Description

The Town of Banff is seeking candidates for the role of Environmental Coordinator to support implementation of the Town’s Environmental Master Plan, with a focus on improving community waste reduction and diversion, advancing the circular economy, and minimizing human-wildlife conflict.

As a global tourism destination community inside Banff National Park and the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage Site, the Town of Banff strives to be a global environmental leader and model environmental community. Banff Council has set ambitious goals including 70% waste diversion by 2028, a 30% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, and zero human-wildlife conflict incidents by 2028. Our environmental goals are aimed at ensuring the community has no negative environmental impacts on the ecological integrity of Banff National Park, while establishing the community as a global sustainability and climate action leader.

The Environmental Coordinator will “Take Care of Banff” by helping residents and businesses reduce their environmental impact on the park and the planet. Immediate priorities will include:

A major drive to increase the uptake of organics diversion by Banff residents, which has been identified as the largest waste diversion opportunity in the community.
Expansion/enhancement of re-use and repair opportunities in the community, including potential capital improvements to the Town’s re-use-it centre.
Improvement of engagement efforts to reduce human-wildlife conflict alongside partners in the Bow Valley Human-Wildlife Coexistence Roundtable.
The Environmental Coordinator will also cultivate a strong working relationship with the Resource Recovery team in the Town’s Operations Department, who oversee the community’s waste diversion, collection, and hauling infrastructure. The Environmental Coordinator will also develop and maintain strategic relationships with local NGOs, the Recycling Council of Alberta, and other leading municipalities working towards a circular economy.

The Environmental Coordinator will work closely alongside the Town’s Energy Coordinator and will report to the Manager of Environment & Sustainability. The Environment team reports to the Director of Planning & Environment.
