As part of the Parks Team, you will put your knowledge in parks maintenance and equipment operation expertise to work. You will supervisor, train, work with, and guide energetic seasonal teams to achieve daily and weeks goals. You will create contracts, operations and Health and Safety documentation. Position Overview:
The Parks Team Leader in Turf will work directly with the Supervisor of Parks to coordinate parks maintenance schedules and ensure the effective management and maintenance of sports fields, green spaces, irrigation, special events, parks facilities and the cemetery, along with providing support and coverage to the Supervisor and other Team Leads. In addition, the team leader will play an integral role in the health and safety, recruitment, training, mentorship and supervision of the parks seasonal team.
Job Requirements
Core Accountabilities:
General:
· Is generally knowledgeable about all Town of Canmore services
· Efficiently uses computer operating systems, software and applications such as MS Office, Outlook, Arc Explorer and the GIS system
· Follows established standard operating procedures for daily work, safety, customer service, and financial transactions
· Maintains confidentiality of all client information
· Anticipates sensitive issues and plans an appropriate strategy
· Competently performs the safe operation of heavy equipment (i.e. backhoe, tandem truck, skid steer, utility vehicles, tractors, ice resurfacer)
Job Specific:
· Team Lead Turf - Implement effective inspection, maintenance, monitoring and repair programs for Turf (sports fields, passive parks, and green spaces – mowing, fertilization, topdressing, aeration, airway, sodding line marking), irrigation and zone mow program. Along with Parks facilities maintenance (boarded rinks, litter picking) and Special Events pre and post event maintenance and coordination. Is knowledgeable with Turf Management Practices / Irrigation / Integrated Pest Management.
· Support the Parks and Cemetery Coordinator by performing field work relating to cemetery operations (measuring and marking plots and monuments placements, hand or equipment digging and back filling, opening and closing columbarium niches for services and performing snow removal). Is knowledgeable with the TOC Cemetery Bylaw.
· Ensure business area industry standards and best management practices are current and met
· Perform business area tasks (inspecting, investigating, sourcing, following up, updating and creating documents, purchasing, digging, repairing, installations, removals, ice hand flooding, driving and performing manual labor)
· Monitor and ensure that business area daily operations maintenance and tracking binders are annually updated and filled in correctly by staff
· Perform Winter outdoor ice surface installation, inspections and maintenance.
· Participate in and assist with the set up and tear down of Town sponsored Special Events
· Assist the other Parks Team leaders with business areas tasks where required, and with coverage when on vacation
· Assist to draft contract documents, post and manage business area contracts / contactors, and attain quotes
· Assist with snow removal from trails and plazas
Supervisory:
· Lead by example and act as a role model for other staff
· Coordinate and execute daily, weekly and monthly parks staffing and maintenance schedules
· Supervise, monitor and follow up with the Parks seasonal team and the Parks Operator in maintaining Parks business area
· To provide Parks seasonal staff with development opportunities, comprehensive training and the support required to confidently, effectively and safely perform tasks and procedures
· To provide Parks seasonal staff with fair and consistent leadership, effective communication and organization
· To actively monitor the performance and moral of the seasonal team
· Recruitment of seasonal workers each year, including screening applicants, interviewing, and getting the department ready for their arrival (uniforms, PPE, locker room set up)
Education & Qualifications:
· Class 5 Drivers License – Required
· Certification in Standard First Aid and CPR – Required
· Class 3 Drivers License with Q endorsement - Asset
· Degree / Certification in Urban Forestry / Arboriculture / Horticulture - Asset
Experience:
· Minimum 3 years Supervisory experience with crews > 12 employees – Required
· Courses in supervisory, conflict resolution, safety, hazard identification - Required
· Minimum 3 years work experience in Parks operations, turf and or golf course and irrigation – Required
· Minimum 2 years Heavy Equipment Operation (backhoe, skid steer, utility vehicle, tractor, tractor with implements) – Required
· Intermediate level of computer skills – Required:
o Excel: creating charts and using multiple worksheets
o Word: using templates, creating tables, importing images
o PowerPoint: Creating slide shows and presentations, importing pictures and text boxes
o Outlook: Opening, creating and sending emails, using filters, searching, using calendar
o Internet: searching and data collection
o Use of SharePoint or similar software application, saving documents to correct locations, ability to share links
o GIS Mapping: Ability to open, search, measure, snip and save maps for use in other documents
· Minimum 2 years work experience with creating documents / reports and tenders for posting, managing contracts / contractors- Asset
· Minimum 2 years experience with managing and maintaining parks assets such as playgrounds, trails, bike parks, skate parks, disc golf courses, tennis courts, ball diamonds, benches, picnic tables, fences, kiosks, picnic tables - Asset
· Mechanical aptitude in small engines (weed whip, pump, mowers, blowers) – Asset
Work Schedule: This is a full time 40-hour work week with a variable summer / winter schedule. Typically working Monday to Friday (7.30 am to 4.30 pm) from April to October (participating in the Unpaid Day Off Program) , then working a rotating weekend work schedule from November to March.
