The Town of Canmore is currently accepting applications and looking to fill full-time temporary positions as Lifeguard/ Swim Instructor. We are looking for applicants who are passionate about aquatics and wanting to make a positive impact in our community!

Position Overview: The Lifeguard/ Swim Instructor position is a fantastic opportunity for an individual with lots of energy, enthusiasm for aquatics, and a positive teamwork attitude. In this role, you will get the opportunity to develop your leadership skills, as you will take the lead to help ensure our guests have both fun and safe experiences. You will meet many diverse and fascinating people in our facility. This includes, being part of and working with a large aquatics team, interacting with local community members, and even interacting with many visitor guests, who come from many different parts of the world. You will be responsible for lifeguarding during our busy public swims, teaching aquatics programs, and performing daily pool checks and maintenance. A strong willingness to go above and beyond in providing excellent customer service and possess very strong interpersonal skills; as the role requires working with people of all ages and abilities. Safety-oriented mindset as ensuring safety is one of the top priorities of this role.

Core Accountabilities:

Instructing
Teach swim individually or in groups the basic stances, movements, techniques, rules, regulations, and safety precautions in a sport
demonstrate correct swim techniques, procedures, use of equipment and exercises to enhance participants’ abilities
assess participants’ levels of ability and create appropriate lesson plans for student/group
ensure the safety of participants at all times by demonstrate and teach appropriate personal safety skills
build confidence in participants and evaluate participant progress and assign grades where appropriate
Lifeguarding

Assist with the safe and efficient operation of the pool on a daily basis
Provide first aid when required in a prompt, professional manner in adherence to current regulations and workplace health and safety practices
Respect customer confidentiality and adhere to all relevant industry regulations, acts, and guidelines
Implement aquatic department policies as outlined by the Lifesaving Society’s Public Aquatic Facility Safety Standards, Head Lifeguard, and the Aquatic Supervisor

Job Requirements

Education & Qualifications:

National Lifeguard award – required
Intermediate First Aid certification – required
Lifesaving Society Swim for Life Instructor certification – required
Aquatic Fitness or other specialty certification, e.g., Kayak, Swim Coach, or Synchronized Swim Coach is considered – asset
Lifesaving Instructor, Lifesaving First Aid Instructor, National Lifeguard Instructor, and Instructor Trainer certifications – asset
Pool Operator Level I certification – asset
Experience:

Previous experience in the Aquatics Industry – asset
A positive attitude with the ability to anticipate needs – required
The ability to communicate effectively and positively with patrons, co-workers, and supervisors – required

Work Schedule: This is a temporary seasonal position, working 40 hours/week. Targeted start date is April 27, 2025 or May 4, 2025 with contracts ending August 31, 2025. Successful applicants will be expected to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
