Position Overview: Reporting to the Climbing Gym Supervisor, the Climbing Technician’s main responsibility is to provide outstanding customer service by ensuring that customers are comfortable, energized, and engaged within the Climbing Gym at Elevation Place. As part of the Town of Canmore’s Recreation department, this position contributes to the ongoing success of the Climbing Gym by welcoming customers, providing Climbing Gym orientations, issuing rental equipment, setting up new clients, running belay tests, performing basic maintenance tasks, delivering programing, mentoring other instructors, and overseeing the climbing gym floor operations. This role supports the business unit with basic administrative functions and projects, as well as contributes to operational planning for the Climbing Gym. Being able to see what needs to be done and organize small groups of co-workers to accomplish tasks are important for success in this role. As a full-time climbing staff, you will be the face of the climbing gym and will take a leadership role in the facility. As an instructor, you will deliver outstanding climbing programs for adults and children, while mentoring other instructors and contributing to program planning.

This job is perfect for someone who is looking to expand their career in the climbing industry and branch out into both leadership and administrative functions. You are a friendly, confident team player who thrives on learning new things, demonstrates leadership and above all, loves climbing and wants to develop that love in others. You can prioritize work under pressure, multi-task, and possess strong leadership, administrative, and communication skills. You have 1-2 years of previous experience in a climbing gym environment, the ability to route set. Significant recreational and professional climbing experience will help you to be successful in this role.

Job Requirements

Core Accountabilities:
• Is knowledgeable of recreational climbing best practices and techniques
• Remains current with industry standards and evolution of safety techniques
• Respects customers’ confidentiality and adheres to all relevant industry regulations, acts, and guidelines
• Manages records in keeping with Town of Canmore policies and procedures
• Ensures the health and safety of co-workers, customers, and volunteers
• Is generally knowledgeable about all Town of Canmore services
• Proficiently and efficiently use computer operating systems, software, and applications such as MS Office, Intelligenz, Dayforce
• Follows established standard operating procedures for safety and customer service
• Seeks out and participates in formal training to enhance workplace skills related to climbing, instructing, recreation and administration

Education & Certifications
• Standard First Aid/CPR/AED – required
• Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) Climbing Gym Instructor (level 1, 2, or 3) – required
• Other ACMG Climbing Stream Certification(s) – asset
• Other work at height certification – asset
• Able to supply a drivers abstract, class 5 driver’s license – asset

Abilities and Experience
• Able to prioritize and work under pressure – required
• Strong administrative, leadership, organizational, and communication skills – required
• Previous work experience in a climbing gym environment – required
• Working knowledge in Microsoft Office – required
• Working knowledge in Intelligenz and Dayforce – preferred
• Comfortable managing large groups, including children – required
• Proven commitment to safety and willingness to abide by all safety procedures and protocols – required
• Route setting experience – preferred
• Significant recreational climbing experience – required
• RCMP criminal record check with a vulnerable population clearance

Work Schedule: This is a full-time (40-hour a week) position requiring both weekend and evening availability.
