Rocky Mountain Adaptive (RMA) is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to enable individuals living with physical, sensory, and neurodivergent challenges to participate, learn and excel in mountain sport and recreational activities in the Canadian Rockies. As a multi-sport, year-round organization who provides access to mountain sport and recreation, RMA offers adaptive sports equipment, specialized instructors, trained volunteers and unique training opportunities. Activities include biking, canoeing, hiking, kayaking, skiing, snowboarding, swimming, and much more! Position Details:
– Start Date: June 1, 2026
– End Date: August 31, 2026
– Timescale: 35 hours / 5 days per week (maximum 40 hours per week)
– Location: Canmore, Kananaskis, and Banff (based in Canmore)
– Working Conditions: Active outdoor environment – physically demanding (lifting/pushing/pulling), required to work outdoors in summer conditions up to 5 days a week, shared office environment
– Report To: Program Coordinator
Position Overview:
The Recreation Programmer will act in a hands-on role facilitating activities and lessons, setting up and packing down adaptive equipment, greeting guests & family members, providing safety briefings to volunteers and supporting staff, providing community awareness of adaptive sport, monitoring and recording each guest’s equipment needs and skills, plus other assigned duties. Successful applicants will focus on either biking, paddling, hiking, or multi-sport activities, while being cross trained in all activities.
Roles and Responsibilities:
(About 90% of the role) Facilitate and/or teach a variety of adaptive activities, primarily in the area of focus:
– May include a variety of adaptive activities (mountain biking, Bowhead biking, leisure biking, paddling, tennis, soccer, climbing, swimming, hiking, others)
– May include various lesson formats (multi-week programs, private lessons for individuals and/or families, specialized group lessons or camps)
– Ensure proper duty of care is maintained for participants, and risks are minimized
– Maintain and setup/take down all required equipment
– Complete regular Lesson Report Forms and Equipment Logs for all activities, including notes on equipment set-up, assessment of skiing/snowboarding level, challenges and successes, and plan for future lessons
– Engage with parents and/or guardians to provide feedback about participant progress, and gather input to improve the program
Help with RMA’s marketing and outreach efforts:
– Gather photo and video content from participants to help them tell their ‘RMA experience stories’
– Assist with various fundraisers and/or outreach events
Drive RMA vehicles and trailers for any programming needs

Eligibility Criteria:
This position is funded through the Canadian Government Summer Jobs Grant Program. Eligible applicants must be 15 to 30 years of age, and a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident in order to apply.
Qualifications:
- Clear Vulnerable Sector Check
- Standard First Aid (AED/CPR C)
- OCC Field Leader (course can be provided during training, continued employment conditional on passing)
- Biking only: BICP/GSMBC/PMBIA Level 1 (course can be provided during training, continued employment conditional on passing)
- Paddling only: Lake Kayak Instructor Level 1 (course can be provided during training, continued employment conditional on passing)
- Class 5 Driver’s Licence
Skills and Experience:
- A keen interest in outdoor education and adaptive sport
- Experience or interest in paddling, hiking, biking, swimming, climbing, or other mountain sports
- Ability to problem solve, work independently and as part of a team
- Time management & organizational skills
- Good oral & written communication skills, good interpersonal skills
- Experience working with individuals with physical and/or neurodivergent challenges an asset
