Job Description

The Friends of Kananaskis Country (FKC) inspire people to discover, value, protect, and enjoy the natural world of Kananaskis Country.

FKC is seeking enthusiastic, confident, and motivated individuals that have a passion for recreation and the outdoors. This role will be part of the Trail Care team tasked with enhancing recreational experiences on multi-use trails in Kananaskis Country. This position reports to a Trail Care Supervisor and is expected to perform light construction tasks including trail building and maintenance, as well as engaging with the public, and basic data collection.

Most of the work priorities are outdoors and in various weather conditions. We are looking for energetic, physically fit, hard-working individuals who are passionate about the environment and outdoor recreation. This position will require weekend work.

This position is based out of Canmore, Alberta.

This position is part of the Canada Summer Jobs program, and the term is from May 1 to August 31, 2025, and is 35 hours/week. The hourly wage is $22/hour.

Duties and Responsibilities

– Willingness and ability to work in a dynamic environment in a team setting.
– Willingness and ability to work in a variety of weather conditions.
– Willingness and ability to perform daily tasks relating to trail maintenance and construction, including but not limited to hiking, biking, walking or standing for 8 or more hours, strenuous digging and moving rocks and occasional tasks relating to other FKC program needs.
– Ability to ride a mountain e-bike on moderately technical trails (eg; blue trails)
– Follow FKC’s Health and Safety Manual.
– Enthusiasm for working with volunteers.
– Ability to think creatively and solve problems.
– Assist with communicating Trail Care events and activity outcomes on FKC website, social media, and newsletter.
– Act as an ambassador for the FKC mission and programming.
– Mature and positive attitude. Professionalism and good communication skills.

Skills Development Opportunities and Plan

Client Service – The Trail Technician will be working with hundreds of volunteers who participate in trail care events throughout the summer. The individual will advance their client service skills by communicating efficiently and professionally with an array of volunteers.

Teamwork – The Trail Technician will be working with FKC Trail Care Supervisors, Program Coordinator and Executive Director, in addition to interacting with a team of volunteers, to implement the Trail Care Work Plan and assist with coordinating tasks, making decisions, and solving problems.

Communication – The Trail Technician will need to use their communication skills to help delegate tasks to volunteers, explain safe work practices, and interact with the team.

Leadership – The Trail Technician will provide leadership skills by demonstrating initiative, confidence and taking responsibility for their assigned tasks and collaborative teamwork with staff and volunteers.
