Job Description

The Canmore Public Library is seeking two enthusiastic post-secondary students to help prepare and run our annual Summer Reading Game. This exciting program promotes literacy and community connections by encouraging children to keep reading during the summer months. This opportunity takes place in the beautiful Rocky Mountains of Canmore, Alberta.

Key Responsibilities:
-Select a theme for the Summer Reading Game and adapt it to the program
-Design and prepare registration, publicity materials, and weekly activities
-Organize storytimes, crafts, STEM activities, scavenger hunts, and one-on-one tutoring
-Reach out to local businesses for prize donations
-Collect and record program data, track participant progress
-Assist with library tasks, including shelving and circulation
-Coordinate and support all Summer Reading Game activities

Work Plan:
May – June: Plan, prepare, and promote the Summer Reading Game (includes school visits, purchasing materials, and canvassing local businesses for donations)
July – August: Lead and manage all program activities, ensuring a fun and educational experience for participants
August: Finalize feedback, tidy up, and evaluate program success

Training & Support:
-Work under the guidance of the Assistant Librarian for mentorship and support
-Orientation with job-shadowing and hands-on training in library operations
-Monthly all-staff meetings and weekly check-ins
-Encouraged to participate in professional development opportunities related to librarianship and programming.
-Certified first-aid training and adherence to Health and Safety policies

Job Requirements

-Post-secondary student with an interest in literacy, non-profit work, and community engagement
-Outgoing, enthusiastic, and comfortable working with children and the public
-Proficient in computer skills
-Independent, motivated, and able to work in a team environment
