Job Description
This is a term position to March 31, 2026, with a possibility of extension.

The Opportunity
The General Technologist (GT) provides technical and operational support to the Head Technologist and the Media and Production (MAP) department. The General Technologist will frequently support facilities and equipment which are outside of Media & Production providing technical support and expertise, including the campus TV system, Banff Centre departments, programs, clients as assigned. The GT performs research and carries out improvements and upgrades to technical and production systems, and recommends equipment acquisitions. The GT facilitates MAP media backups and restores and supports organization of storage area network assets.
Roles and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Technical Producer/Director, below are some key accountabilities:
– Support the MAP Technologists and technicians by researching and solving technical issues they encounter; doing this by uncovering work-around, learning, and teaching operating characteristics of newly acquired machinery and keeping thorough documentation of the same.
– Help maintain the database of equipment and manuals.
– Research, design and implement newer and better technical methods. Make recommendations to the Manager of Technical Services regarding the same.
– Perform basic repairs on machines and cable assemblies. Order parts for the same. Arrange for outsourced service for tough problems and items under warranty. Package and ship the same. Complete any necessary administrative paperwork as required.
– Service, monitor, test and upgrade the campus wide CATV distribution system.
– Consult on, install and maintain departmental fixed-facility installations as well as keeping clear documentation
– Support various installations on campus such as the radio and paging repeaters, intercom systems, Crestron (A/V) & satellite music systems in the Kinnear Centre, Sally Borden and Lloyd Hall and others.
– Administer, install and uninstall software on Macs and PCs used in MAP department and other arts programming areas and departments as required. Perform simple hardware upgrades or install replacement parts in the same.
– Facilitate LTO tape backups and restores, including documenting the systems tracking of assets.
– Support MAP’s broadcast initiatives, such as live event streaming, as required. This includes simulcasting and distributing signals to various rooms/locations.
– Assist the Head Technologist as assigned.
– Other related duties as may be assigned.
Job Requirements
Qualifications and Educational Requirements
- This position requires above average computer literacy, achieved through post-secondary education; e.g., degree, certificate or diploma in electronics, computer maintenance/technology, computer graphics, or equivalent combination of related education and experience.
- Training and/or experience in basic electronics and troubleshooting and repair techniques for the same are required.
- This position also requires a thorough knowledge of industry standards in audio and video software and hardware.
- A year of experience in some branch of front-line customer service and a minimum of three years of experience involving basic maintenance on electronic machinery is needed for the job.
- The ability to understand, communicate and document complex A/V systems and signal paths.
- Troubleshooting skills are a critical element.
- Driver’s license.
Special Requirements
- Due to the nature of the job, this position requires the candidate to be available to work a flexible, irregular schedule and weekends.

- In accordance with CUPE 4318, this is a unionized, hourly support staff position, subject to a 500 hour probationary period.
- This position pays $23.29 to $24.45 per hour working up to 40 hours per week on a rotating schedule.
