Position Overview:
The GIS Technician provides mapping and GIS support to the IT Department, other Town departments, and the community. Core responsibilities of the GIS Technician include: GIS data collection and editing, updating GIS databases, creating custom web and mobile GIS applications, preparing GIS data submissions, producing PDF maps, and providing support for asset inventory and mapping.
Core Accountabilities:
Input utility asset data from submitted as-built drawings into the GIS system using ArcGIS Pro
Update, clean, and maintain the Town’s addressing dataset based on Addressing Memo’s created by the Planning department
Use standardized workflows submit addressing data to Calgary 911 and AHS dispatch
Convert GIS utility asset data into AutoCAD format
Write GIS workflow documentation
Update a wide variety of PDF and printed maps
Work with operational departments to clean and update data using ArcGIS Pro
Update ArcGIS Online resources such as the Town of Canmore Open Data site and Property Information Viewer website
Design web mapping and mobile mapping workflows and datasets in ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS FieldMaps
Create web mapping applications and dashboards in ArcGIS Online
Respond to GIS Tickets and GIS mapping requests
Update PDF maps for Town documents such as the Land Use Bylaw and Engineering Design and Construction Guidelines
Create maps for newspaper advertisements and website articles
Complete semi-automated and manual GIS data processing tasks based on documented workflows
Clean and edit GIS data to meet established standards identified in GIS Data Governance Plan
Job Requirements
Education & Qualifications:
Post-secondary education in a related technical discipline such as Geography, GIS, Remote Sensing, Computer Science, Data Science, Geomatics Engineering, or equivalent
Membership with URISA or similar professional organization
Able to work towards obtaining professional certification from ESRI and/or the GIS Certification Institute
Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License required
Experience:
Working knowledge of mapping software including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS FieldMaps, and AutoCAD
Working knowledge of GIS file types, map projections, and coordinate systems
1 - 3 years of GIS experience
Demonstrates cartography and map design skills and a passion for producing quality maps
Attention to detail and process when editing critical datasets such as GIS Addressing data for 911 dispatch
Working knowledge of ArcGIS Model Builder and the basics of Python and/or Arcade programming languages to complete geoprocessing tasks, perform queries, and modify data attributes and labels
Understands the fundamentals of relational databases, including SQL queries and table joins and relates
Ability to configure and customize mobile and web GIS applications using ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcGIS Online
Working knowledge of civil infrastructure, utility asset types, and municipal operations
Can work with diverse user groups and departments to develop solutions that meet their unique GIS needs
Loves working with computer systems, maps, and GIS data and looks beyond the obvious to solve information inconsistencies
Proficient Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
Is reliable and action-oriented, meets deadlines and expectations
Ability to independently problem-solve GIS errors using online resources and documentation
Ability to identify personal knowledge gaps and self-train using online resources
Collaboratively works with other GIS staff to solve technical problems and roadblocks
Salary & Benefits:
Pay Range- $38.20 to $42.69 per hour to start. Compensation will be calculated based on the successful candidate’s related work experience and education
This is a Permanent Full-Time position (35 hours per week)
Hybrid Work - minimum of 3 days in the office per week
