Job Description

The Bow Valley Primary Care Network (PCN) aims to improve access to primary care, through coordinated team-based care. As a member of the PCN’s Interdisciplinary Health Team, the Mental Health Clinician (MHC) works in partnership with the medical home team and allied health team to ensure delivery of high-quality evidence-based health care.
The individual who thrives at Bow Valley PCN is energized by primary care reform, values working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary healthcare team, and embraces a patient-led, self-management approach. PCN mental health services focus on providing short-term, one-to-one counselling to adults (18+) aimed at strengthening emotional and mental well-being. This includes support with life changes and transitions, stress management, healthy relationships, and lifestyle habits. In addition, the Mental Health Clinician facilitates community-based psychoeducational workshops that promote mental health and wellness.

Job Requirements

The Mental Health Clinician is responsible for:

• Assess and manage patients' mental and / or behavioural health concerns.
• Respond to referrals, deliver individual (1:1) consultations and coordinate services / care including facilitating referrals to other appropriate service providers and social supports.
• Work collaboratively with allied health and medical home teams to support patient’s health goals.
• Develop and deliver group psychoeducation classes.
• Utilize behavior modification strategies to assist patients with goal setting.
• Employ health promotion and health education strategies to support health behaviour change within a short-term counselling model.
• Ensure the maintenance of up to date and accurate records in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) to optimize patient care and adhere to the practice policy.
• Participate in data collection and evaluation as required.
• Offer training support for PCN team members and assist in their professional development.

Applicants must have the following qualifications and experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in psychology or social work (with speciality in clinical counselling)
• Master’s level education preferred.
• Active member in good standing with the Professional College or Health Professional Governing Body related to this role, that is recognized by the Alberta Health Professions Act. Proof of registration in good standing is required annually.
• Minimum of 2 years’ working as a mental health / behavioral health clinician.
• Experience working in healthcare settings, in primary care (preferred).
• Experience and skills in implementing appropriate treatment modalities and approaches (e.g., cognitive and dialectical behavioral therapy, stress management, mindfulness, etc.).
• Experience documenting in Electronic Medical Records (EMRs).
• Demonstrated ability and willingness to work in an unstructured and dynamic environment that requires flexibility and collaboration with other health professionals and community providers.
• Experience in health promotion and individual/group education is an asset.
• Ability to flex time as required (evenings and weekends) to facilitate psychoeducation classes.

Other Job-Related Requirements:
• Proficient in basic computer skills (Microsoft 365 Suite, email, EMR)
• Vulnerable sectors criminal record check
• As travel may be required between clinics, a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle

Perks & Benefits

A part time (0.6 FTE) position is 23.25 hours/week (7.75 hours / day). Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Extended health benefits, RRSP matching and vacation allotment are part of the total compensation following successful completion of a 3-month probationary period.
